TL;DR: In one week, China Eastern launched Shanghai-London Stansted and YTO Cargo launched Jiaxing-Budapest. Three flights a week each. Wuhan-Indonesia container routes hit 81 voyages. The air cargo network is densifying fast enough to change shipping economics for higher-value imports.
Air cargo used to be for emergencies. Something went wrong with ocean freight. You needed it yesterday. You paid a premium and swore never again.
That math is changing. In the last two weeks of June 2026 alone:
Shanghai to London Stansted. First flight June 24. China Eastern. 96 tonnes of cargo. Three flights per week.
Jiaxing to Budapest. First flight June 20. YTO Cargo Airlines. Three flights per week. Roughly 14 hours.
Wuhan to Indonesia. The 81st voyage departed June 16. 620,000 tonnes of cargo. $1.4 billion in trade value since the route launched. Seven days faster than alternatives. ¥300 or more per tonne in savings.
Why More Routes Means Better Rates
When there are two carriers on a route, they compete. When there are five, the competition is real. Each new route adds capacity. More capacity means lower rates per kilo. Lower rates change the breakeven point between air and ocean freight.
A product that was too heavy for air freight last year might make sense this year. The margin between air cost and ocean cost is shrinking. For products in the $20-100 per kilo range, air is increasingly competitive when you factor in the inventory carrying cost of 30 extra days at sea.
What to Watch
Watch Budapest. YTO chose it as their first European destination for a reason. It is a hub for Eastern European distribution, away from the congested Western European airports. Goods landed in Budapest can reach Warsaw, Prague, Vienna, and Bucharest faster than goods landed in Frankfurt and trucked east.
Watch Wuhan. The direct Indonesia route is not a one-off. It has run 81 voyages. The volume is real. The cost savings are documented. For importers sourcing from central Chinese factories, Wuhan offers an alternative to trucking goods to Shanghai for export.
